We dabbled in hunt tests in the early 90's with good friend Garth Gourlay but it wasn't until Lin Sell and I met Jim Basham (of Dual Champion Gordon Setter fame) that we started to think about developing dual purpose English Setters. He taught us to focus on bringing out their natural abilities and then breeding to get those desired traits, while not losing our show conformation. Lin and I have spent most of the past few years learning and training our dogs in the field. I love this photo of Jim and the 8 week old Graffiti x Puppet kids - after 8 hrs in the car, they all got out and immediately locked on point at the sight of the wing! It's going to be a long road (I train my dogs myself and run them in all of their events) but we're having fun doing it and truly, there is nothing more beautiful than watching a setter cover a field ... hunting like it was bred to do! Thanks to people like MA Samuelson (Heathrow ES) and Melissa Newman (Setter Ridge ES) the path has been forged for developing a true dual English Setter. Highlights from our Field Trial and Hunt Test adventuresCricket
Cricket also set CKC history in June 2005 at the age of 14 yrs 2 months when she obtained the last leg to earn her FDj title! (we had moved to the US for a number of years and weren't able to get back to finish her title earlier). The judge said that she ran like a 14 month old that day! Sketch
Sketch finished his AKC Junior Hunter title (JH) and turned a few heads in the process! He has a very determined running style and strong bird desire. I ran him in his first AKC field trial and he was 3rd in Open Derby and he won the amateur Derby for a 2 pt win! Sketch also set CKC English Setter history when he became the first documented show-bred English Setter to obtain his CKC Field Dog title (similar to AKC Senior Hunter). He finished his junior title one weekend and got his first senior pass the next weekend and was awarded "Gunner's Choice" award!
Sketch and his sister "Diva" finished their AKC JH's on the same day! Graffiti Graffiti had his first exposure to birds in Ohio with Jim Basham at age 11 weeks. He's shown here with an Elhew pointer pup a few weeks older than him. Graffiti finished both his FDj and JH in fine style with straight passes and high scores! Graffiti is working his Senior Hunter and Field Dog titles as well as running in "broke" dog stakes in field trials. No matter what he's doing .. it's hard not to notice Graffiti! Showing broke to wing Tag Tag is following in his father's footsteps and is showing his field potential right off the bat! ... natural retrieving abilities at 14 weeks! Tag finished his FDj title as a youngster and has 3 solid passes on his AKC JH title. He's running well in all-breed derby stakes out here on the prairies. Design AKC FT ptd Linwood Artwork Designed in B&W JH While I don't own Design, she has earned a place on my page for many reasons! 1. She is Graffiti's only daughter (Tag's sister) 2. She's Lin's first ever "blue" setter and 3. She's not only an amazing English Setter ... she's an amazing dog in the field ... and oh, so adorable! You can see more of her on Lin's website.
